Video: SGInnovate: What It Is, and How It Helps Singapore's Entrepreneurs Tackle Global Issues
Venture Capital, Video
Andrew Work of NexChange talks to Steve Leonard, founder and CEO of SGInnovate, at Rise Hong Kong 2017. SGInnovate is helping the entrepreneurial and ambitious build products and companies in science and tech through Singapore’s innovation ecosystem.
The company has been established to help ambitious and capable people to build ‘deep-tech’ products borne out of science research.
Hi, I’m Andrew Work with NexChange and we are at Rise in Hong Kong. It’s an exciting time to be here and I’m excited to speak to Steve Leonard. He is the CEO of SGInnovate out of Singapore and Steve, I saw you talk at M Tech the MIT Technology Review event a couple months ago, but can you tell me about what is going on at SGInnovate what the organization is all about and what you’re doing there?
Well, we’re thinking about problems that have a global application; future of health, the future of energy, future of transportation. There’s great research occurring in Singapore as there is around the world, turning that into products that people can consume — that’s the challenge, so we’re trying to do is invest in early stage companies, back those ambitious founders, help them on that journey to actually productizing something that affects not only Singapore but the world.
So, if people want to get involved do they have to be Singaporeans starting Singaporean companies in Singapore or can people from the rest of the world connect with SGInnovate?
Rest of the world is fine, the only thing that we ask is since we are putting money to work from Singapore — there has to be some link. What we’re not doing is investing in somebody that’s based in a faraway country that has no link at all to Singapore, so they don’t have to be Singaporean but they have to have something to do with Singapore.
Okay, so if you’ve got a great idea it sounds like Singapore might be the place to be. You should come and talk to the CEO of SGInnovate, which is Steve Leonard, thanks for talking to us.
